Is the 16:9 aspect ratio of movies/HDTV (a ratio of 1.777..) more attractive than the 4:3 of Standard Def (1.333..) because it is closer to the golden ratio (1.6180339887..)?
Rebekka says she believes that it's intentional. At first I didn't think so, but now I agree. The golden ratio is a crucial concept in architecture, the visual and musical arts, so it would make sense.

I think there's definitely something to this. I've tried making videos with wider aspect ratios (28:9, for instance), and the eye can't focus on both sides of the screen, even if it's on the same size screen where you would watch a 16:9 flick.
